Obituary for George M. Porter III
On April 7th, George Mark Porter III (Captain Big George), peacefully left his earthly body. Preceded in death by his father, George Marks Porter Jr., he leaves behind to cherish his memory Bert Porter, wife and best friend of 28 years, Josh Porter, his only child, mother Elizabeth Vilas, brothers John Porter and son Dakota, Dennis Porter, daughter Lil and son Nick, Michael Porter and wife Mary, Sisters-in-law Dolores Ray, Sarah and husband Duke Kunerth, Marie Welch, Betty and husband Matt Shultz and Brothers-in-Law Gary and wife Sue Welch, and Sammy Welch, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends from all over the world.

George loved traveling, following his favorite band "The Grateful Dead" on many of their tours, making numerous friends in his travels across the United States that couldn't resist his charismatic personality and high-spirited laugh, but not limiting himself to that because he enjoyed all types of music. He loved traveling across Europe during the winter for numerous years, while working as a commercial fisherman for 35 years, 28 of them as a Captain, working the longest at Seaford Scallop Company.

George was a wonderful father and husband who passed down to his son his special trait of being a man with a huge, loving heart who genuinely cared about people. He made strong bonds with his many friends, always making them feel special. He was a sports fanatic, participating in various sports at the Langley Park Boys Club in Maryland while growing up. He was always there to provide support and encouragement for his son, who inherited his love of sports, magnetic personality, and infectious sense of humor. He will always be remembered by his family as being a gentle giant of a man with a heart of gold.

A Celebration of His Life will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, April 21st at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church in McKenney, Virginia. Following the Service a reception will be held in the Church Social Hall.

“Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes. Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis. Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion.
Shall we go, you and I, while we can?” (Grateful Dead; Dark Star).
